His name was Graham Craigie, a pilot from the London area. He had taken a career break of 18 months to go flying at various places around the world. I had known him for only 2 months. We flew together 10 days earlier at Montmin, Entrevernes and Marlens with 2 other British pilots. When we flew at Marlens, we waited for the strong SE wind to calm down before launching at 17:00 and found that the wind near to launch was ok and even found some gentle thermals, but the valley wind further out, above the landing field was still strong >30kph and rough. There were lenticular clouds over the higher peaks  to the south east and for the second half of our flight we simply wanted to get down safely. I would not fly Marlens in the afternoon in a Southerly wind again.

After hearing the sad news, I guessed that he was with other pilots that day, because of the transport requirements of Marlens (no navette), and the lack of witnesses implied he was last to launch. Unfortunately, I am also looking for answers to his accident. If the police investigation finds a fault with his equipment or a failure to secure his leg straps, for example, then we will have an explanation at least.

Looking at the forecast on meteo-parapente.com for that day, the wind was 16 kph/SE on launch, so he may have hit a rotor coming off the trees in front of launch or to the left of launch, but the other local pilots had no such problems. If he had flown for 3 seconds more before falling, he would have landed in the trees and probably survived. The fence mentioned in a previous post, borders a small road, so he may have hit part of the road, increasing the impact forces.

This is all speculation until the investigation completes and even then, we may not know the full story.

Personal Observations: He seemed to prefer a forward/apline launch, which is dangerous at Marlens in my opinion, because of the steep take-off slope. If he had a cravatte or other problem, he would be airborne before noticing. The point where he fell is approximately the location where a pilot will sit back in his harness to get correctly seated. It may be possible that he grabbed his risers to push back in the seat and pulled his A's or had an open karabiner. He also had a habit of not using a radio and would not be able to alert the other pilots after the accident, assuming he was still alive, delaying medical attention. He wore a full face helmet. He had no pre-inflatable back/side protectors in his harness. He did not wear a back protector or emergency inflatable vest (common in motorcycle racing, horse riding and ski racing). His wing was an Ozone Geo 4/5. He had an open harness, something like an old Gin Gingo, not a pod harness.

Thank you Graham. My condolences to his family and friends.
